Apple Pie in the Face Read our letter to the show for the details:Dear Dr. Phil: Congratulations! You have won Mothers & More's first ever Apple Pie in the Face Award! In fact, the show you aired on Monday, Nov. 10, "Mom vs. Mom," was the inspiration behind creating this award, which calls attention to acts that divide mothers or trivialize the struggles mothers face in balancing caregiving with their other needs and responsibilities. Sample Email to Send Dr. Phil:NOTE: Use language in parens if it applies to you. Dear Dr. Phil: (As a loyal watcher and believer in your show,) I was extremely disappointed in your Mom vs. Mom episode Monday, November 10. Why did you feel it necessary to make an issue as important as how a mother balances paid work with family an adversarial forum? You divide the audience into warring factions and choose the most contentious, extreme mothers to represent both groups. Those women do not represent the norm-you must know that. The vast majority of mothers know the sacrifices, compromises and hardships of both sides of the coin. You did what so many in our society do: make the mother feel guilty and force her to "defend her choice." I know that you plan to do a follow-up show. I hope it's not just a continuation of the same contrived drama. I hope you take the time to look into why mothers are put in this awful position. I hope you allow your experts to speak and not let your show be taken over by fanatics. If, however, it turns out to be no more than Part II of this tired, counter-productive "Divide & Conquer for Ratings" garbage, it will be the last Dr. Phil Show I watch, and I will encourage my friends to tune you out as well. Sample Letter to the Editor:Dear Editor, I would like to share a recent example of how mothers as a group continue to be misrepresented and manipulated by the mass media for its own purposes. A recent Dr. Phil Show titled "Mom vs. Mom" literally divided the audience into two warring factions - at-home mothers and working mothers - and then provoked them by airing prerecorded inflammatory comments made by audience members from both "sides". Dr. Phil then threw down the gauntlet between the two groups by announcing, "Welcome to 'Cat fights Are Us,'" complete with meows. The show chose the most fanatical, stereotypical members of the audience to speak on behalf of each side and they were given the opportunity throughout the show to attack each other. Of course, Dr. Phil was the rational, thoughtful adult who played the middle ground, trying to bring reason to these hot-headed ladies. The lack of societal support and real choices for balancing work and family is a serious issue, not a "mommy war". Dr. Phil's show exploited mothers for ratings rather than exploring real solutions and seeking common ground. Mothers & More (www.mothersandmore.org), a national women's organization, is taking the Dr. Phil Show to task for this shameful misrepresentation of mothers by awarding Dr. Phil their Apple Pie in the Face Award. The award calls attention to acts that divide mothers or trivialize the struggles mothers face in balancing caregiving with their other needs and responsibilities. I plan to do my part by contacting the Dr. Phil Show myself to let them know they can count me out as a viewer in future, and I encourage all mothers out there to consider doing the same. It's time for mothers to unite and say, "We're not going to allow the media to divide and conquer us for their own purposes anymore!" Sincerely, |
